Seasoned actor and TV host Vic Sotto admits he was an absentee father to his older kids, and credits their mothers for helping shape their character.

“They didn’t grow up with me. Their moms played a huge role in forming their attitude. That’s the sad part about being an absentee dad,” Sotto told Lifestyle, referring to his children Danica and Oyo with Dina Bonnevie, Vico with Connie Reyes, and Paulina with Angela Luz.

“Now that they’re older, I try to make time for them at least once a week. I visit them or have dinner with them. Sometimes, I just watch a basketball game with them,” he added. His daughter Danica is married to Filipino French basketball player Marc Pingris. “I make up for it by being a good provider.”

Sotto, married to actress Pauleen Luna since 2016, now has two younger children—Tali, 7, and Mochi, 1.

“It’s different with these two. I got to witness Tali’s milestones because it happened during the pandemic when I wasn’t working. For almost two years, I stayed home. I got to enjoy it despite the worries about what was happening outside. It gave me time to relax after working on TV since I was 16.”

He continued: “I heard Tali’s first words and saw her first steps. I was able to spend time with her. I’m doing the same with Mochi now. Tali loved ‘Cocomelon,’ while Mochi is into ‘Ms. Rachel.’”

While a much-anticipated briefing on Saturday failed to deliver a hoped-for overall figure on stimulus, Lan Fo’an did set out plans to boost the beleaguered property sector, ramp up borrowing, and work to get banks lending more.

DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the insurance claims must be immediately released to ensure recovery in agricultural production.

Asked how he keeps up with the younger generation in his home, Sotto said: “You have to adjust, especially in how you talk to them. With Tali, it’s like talking to an adult. At 7, she understands a lot, and it’s easy to explain things to her. I just go with the flow. I even use terms like ‘TYSM’ (thank you so much). I have kids who are millennials, zoomers, and Gen Alphas. Their language is so different—I can’t just be a boomer.”

We asked Sotto to share some advice, particularly on taking the best couple selfies. “I know a lot of couples quarrel over selfies,” he said, laughing. “But Pauleen already takes care of that for us. I only take selfies when someone with a longer arm is needed.

“Petty stuff like that? We don’t fight about it. Pauleen’s cool, and I’m chill. I think that’s the secret—open communication. No secrets. If there’s something to talk about, you discuss it immediately,” he said.

This month, Sotto and Luna will celebrate their ninth wedding anniversary. They initially planned to fly to Los Angeles for the 2nd Manila International Film Festival, but the event was canceled due to the wildfires in California. However, Sotto’s film “The Kingdom,” directed by Mike Tuviera, will still screen in other U.S. states, as well as in Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Italy.

Game changer

For a comedian like Sotto, getting to play a dramatic role in “The Kingdom” was a game changer. “It was a big challenge. When it was offered to me, I liked the story immediately. I asked who I’d be working with, and they said Piolo [Pascual] was still in talks—this was early 2024. I said, ‘If Piolo says yes, I’m game!’”

Sotto watched the film for the first time at the premiere. Tali, who joined him, couldn’t stop crying. “She and I still talk about the movie up to now. I had to explain why my character did what he did. Pauleen prepped Tali beforehand and even brought her to the set while I was shooting my fight scene with Piolo. I had to assure her that what she saw wasn’t real blood, just strawberry-flavored syrup. I told her, ‘You can smell it!’”

Sotto revealed that he’s in talks to create a series for a streaming platform. “As long as I get offers that interest me, I’ll keep going. On TV, we’re already preparing for the 50th year of ‘Eat Bulaga.’ Five decades of entertaining Pinoys—that’s hard to beat,” he said proudly.

During the launch of Sotto as the ambassador of an organic health and wellness product, he was asked whether he still has guilty pleasures at 70. He replied, “I stopped smoking many years ago. I’m also not into sweets and sugary food—maalat pwede pa. So far, I don’t take any maintenance medicine.”

Sotto was also asked about the court case involving filmmaker Darryl Yap, but he declined to discuss details, citing a gag order. The case stems from a teaser video for Yap’s film “The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma,” which Sotto claimed contained sensitive “personal information” about him. Sotto has also filed 19 counts of cyber libel against Yap.

“I have a clean consciencegolden palasyo, so I’m not worried. I’m just chill. You will only get stressed if you keep thinking about it. God will not give you problems that you will not be able to handle,” he said. “What’s great is that I feel the support of friends and family. They give me strength. As for Pauleen, I take the lead, so she’s also chill. The same goes for my children—we’ve learned to cope with issues like this through the years.”
